Thunderstorms

The weather is being really strange. It actually looks like it's going to rain any moment, but it is still winter, and I do not live in Cape Town (yet). And I just had my car washed. Oh well.

I can't wait for summer to come. There is nothing like a good highveld afternoon thunderstorm to cool everything down after another blisteringly hot morning. The majestic way the clouds build up to their cumulus glory. The strange yellow-brown light that decends just before the first drops hit the dusty earth. That unique smell, a mixture of dust and water, that you always get at the beginning of a thunderstorm. Then the slow buildup of sounds into a deafining noise, punctuated by rolls of thunder.

But this isn't the kind of storm that lasts very long, so before the drops even stop falling, the sun is bursting through again. But everything feels different, newer, fresher. And if you're really lucky there just might be a rainbow somewhere in there too.
